Hamilton stars in Blockbuster F1 Belgian GP
Lady Luck strikes again
|
Formula 1 fans on Sunday witnessed one of the most spellbinding Grands Prix races of the season. Lewis Hamilton won the Belgian GP but was given a 25 second post race penalty... and 2nd place finisher Felipe Massa was given the victory.
The penalty put Hamilton on third place, just behind an outstanding Nick Heidfeld. Not quite coherent? Here's what happened:
With two laps to go before the chequered flag, Kimi Raikonnen was in the lead, 2 seconds ahead of a fiery Lewis Hamilton. And then the heavens opened up, spraying vicious water all over the circuit and hydroplaning the dry tires on the cars. Kimi Raikonnen couldn;t face the heat and Hamilton, who easily is the grand master of wet weather conditions gave Kimi hell.
With one and a half lap to go, Hamilton took on the gravel and passed Raikkonen. Realizing that he'd be penalized, he let Raikkonen pass him again... and then masterfully re-took the lead. And then Raikkonen, who was left completely flabbergasted, crashed on a wall.
As Kimi walked back to the Ferrari pit, knowing that he's now lost all chance of winning a championship, Hamilton drove past the chequered flag, followed by Massa. In another mind blowing event, with two laps left in the race, Nick Heidfeld pitted and changed to wet tires... he ended up zooming past FIVE cars on the last lap...climbing from 8th to 3rd position.
Hamilton, though he finished first was slapped a 25 second penalty for overtaking Raikkonnen from the gravel, and ended up in third place. Massa collected 10 points, and is now just two points behind Hamilton in the chanpionship lead. The true hero of the race was Nick Heidfeld... he ended up on second place.
